India watchdog calls for views on satellite gateway

16 November 2021

India's Telecom Regulatory Authorty of India (TRAI) has invited stakeholders' views to explore the framework for setting up satellite gateways in the country.

The move comes as demand rises due to the development of satellites in low and medium orbits.

Inputs on the issues raised in the consultation paper are required by December 13, with counter comments expected by December 27.

India's Department of Telecommunications asked TRAI to address the limitations with respect to satellite gateway operations as there are currently no provisions regarding the use of gateway by service providers established by a satellite constellation operator.

TRAI said it will examine all factors holistically and recommendations for a framework for satellite gateway operations may be suggested - these include the entry feem bank guarantee and any other issues relating to MEO/LEO/HTS.
