COAI demands WiFi 6E router action

The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has demanded that the government restrict sales of WiFi 6E routers that use the 6GHz spectrum band, which has not yet been officially designated an unlicenced band.

A letter from COAI that was sent to the Department of Telecommunication claimed that e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, Flipkart and Moglix were selling WiFi 6E routers, as were some offline traders.

New cable proposed between Africa, Asia and Indian Ocean countries

Mauritius Telecom (Mauritius), Orange and Reliance Jio Infocomm (India) have initiated discussions with a view to installing a submarine fibre optic cable called T4 which will connect Africa, Asia, and the Indian Ocean countries.

The T4 cable will replace the South Africa Far East (SAFE) cable which will reach the end of its life in 2027. The cost of the project is estimated between $150-200 million.

Rural telcos to see fast-tracked energisation

The move by National Electrification Administration (NEA) to fast-track energization of rural telco facilities will help PLDT and Smart Communications roll out mobile services in those areas faster.

The NEA’s publication of Memorandum Order No. 2024-18 provides guidelines streamlining the energization process for telecoms towers in areas covered by electric cooperatives. The order essentially cuts the processing time down to 30 days.

APJII signs MoU with Starlink for Indonesia

The Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) has signed an MoU with SpaceX’s Starlink to provide internet access in Indonesia, although the operators continues to wait for final regulatory approval to operate in the country.

APJII chairman Muhammad Arif said that Starlink will focus on rural areas, especially in the underdeveloped, frontmost and outermost regions of the archipelago.
