Afghanistan: ‘unregistered SIM cards’ facilitates crimes and terrorism

17 February 2021

The Afghan telecom watchdog said that operators have been fined for selling unregistered SIM cards, with 70% of these SIM cards blocked.

Speaking to BBC Persian, Telecom Regulatory Authority of Afghanistan (ATRA) spokesman Noor Saeed Shinwari said that all telcos companies in the country were warned that all the active and existing SIM cards must be registered by the end of 1400 (Solar Hijri Calendar).

Shinwari also said the government took this step to ensure security, because many terrorist activities, blasts, and various other crimes are being carried out using unregistered mobile SIM cards.

Unregistered wireless services in landlocked Afghanistan had facilitated the insurgency or terrorist attacks, IED blasts, different criminal activities, and supported many organised crimes.
